BROADBAND THAILAND 2015

Written at the request of Chulalongkorn University’s Meaningful Broadband Working Group, this report aggregates multiple sources of data to forecast two scenarios for broadband in Thailand. Noting that broadband has become an overall driver of macroeconomic change in Asia, we predict that the first scenario, called Business as Usual, will cause Thailand’s economy to decline relative to other Asian nations. The other scenario, called Meaningful Broadband, would boost Thailand’s competitive advantage well into 21st century. The report concludes by posing a question to Thailand’s leaders: Which scenario will prevail?

In this one-of-a-kind interactive Pubic Forum, come hear one of Thailand’s most innovative technology leaders, Mr. Suphachai Chearavanont, CEO of True Corp. In his role as Rotating Chairman of Chulalongkorn’s Meaningful Broadband Working Group, he will look beyond the nation’s current fixation on 3G licensing to a bold plan for the nation’s transformation through broadband.

Then Chulalongkorn Prof Craig Warren Smith, Director of the Working Group, will release a draft model for how this vision can be achieved through the coordinated action of government, business and academia. Thailand could emerge as a test market for “killer apps” that bring skills and economic security to two billion cell phone users as they upgrade to smart mobile devices.
